Electrical Substation Demolished in Yosemite National Park

The obsolete electrical substation, located near Camp 4 in Yosemite Valley, was demolished prior to removal from the park

Substation I, a 3800 square foot area containing high voltage electrical transformers, was built prior to the 1930s. It was located near Camp Four in Yosemite Valley, a popular walk-in campground with 35 sites. Substation 1 has been inactive since the early 1990s, when the emplacement of an underground high voltage distribution system made the substation obsolete.

On October 26, 2005, park contractors and maintenance crews began shipping the electrical transformers out of Yosemite Valley. Once out of the park they will be emptied of oil and cleaned. The oil and scrap metal from the transformers will be recycled.

Removal of all parts is expected by Thanksgiving of this year. Once removal is complete, the site will be restored to a natural state.
