Thought it was Brainard, and the Inyo NF site it is: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/inyo/rec ... 0&actid=50" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but on TM map it is misspelled Brainerd.
Sorry those blood sucking vampires made your trip miserable, really felt sorry
for Callie in the picture with the red rain jacket.

Thanks for the trip report. I had been interested in checking out the South Fork, but I was not sure if it was a dog friendly trail because I had read that the upper part of the trail was fairly rough. Good to see Callie was able to make it up there although she got ate up by the skeeters.

It is also spelled Brainerd in the Mike White books.

Great report and beautiful pictures! It is amazing what a difference a few weeks makes. I was up there at the start of June, (still need to post a report) and rerouted over to that same lake after my boots decided to explode while I was on my way to climb Mount sill...

There were a couple mosquitoes around, but it was mellow enough we were able to alternate between jumping off the rocks into the lake and laying on the warm granite in the sun without really getting bitten.

Lovely area, you really managed to capture the lake well.

Great report! You really put me into the action with your reports, so well done on the writing! I really felt for your situation as I know we've all had things not go according to plan from time to time. But it makes us prepared for the next challenge ahead! :)

Thanks for the great report.

More trivia: "Place Names of the Sierra Nevada" says:
Brainerd Lake - "Lawson Brainerd was a White Mountain District ranger ...", "...name was incorrectly spelled Brainard ..."

You would think Inyo NF and Summitpost in several posts for example here:
http://www.summitpost.org/thumb-from-br ... ail/214647" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
would have it correctly spelled on their sites, especially Inyo if it is named
after one of their own rangers, but then again maybe not.
Guess I will find out from the USGS office in Menlo Park when I get back
Monday if nobody in the mean time gets some official proof of the spelling
of its name.

Yet more trivia: My Nat Geo TOPO! program uses "a" on the level 4 map and "e" on level 5.
