I think bears have seen artificial lighting in tents before.

I like the dark. It's one of the things that I treasure about the backcountry: the lack of the artificial light that is omnipresent in the rest of my life. I was on a two week trip last summer and my little keychain LED failed suddenly one night. So I had no light. And I never missed it. But lots of people appear to want abundant light when they are outdoors. Those Luci things are super popular and just about everybody has an unnecessarily bright LED headlamp. So why not light up the tent itself? It's a little extra weight, though not that much. And Big Agnes is charging a lot more than it's worth for a $5-10 off the shelf item.

But if you don't mind a few extra ounces and gifting $20 to BA then what's the harm? Some people might take offense but I don't think the bears will care one way or the other.
