A-16 is going out of business

Post by CAMERONM »

I received a letter about A-16 going out of business and a sale starting Nov. 29. Of course, we all knew that it was only a matter of time. Still, I regret that one more real store is disappearing. For many of us, A-16 was a hub of meetings, information swapping and equipment for so long. I took my first wilderness courses there, attended side shows, rented equipment, bought maps, etc.

End of an era.

Started a wholesale business with a friend in 1992 called High Sierra Outfitters and Adventure 16 products made up the majority of our product line. End of an era indeed.

No way, hard to believe. I just read https://www.snewsnet.com/people/adventure-16-is-closing while listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn6_yT9SKpM. Kind of like a requiem.

I remember the Gambler's Sale. I would go the third day. It was great fun. Rushing to get your sleeping bag or tent before somebody else did and then waiting in line to purchase your item with everyone else who had just done the same thing and were happy with their great deal.

It was more than a store. It was a source of creativity and outdoor community.

I would like to start something that will result in that type of space. Anyone else? I'm 54 years old. I've been through three (3) long-term career jobs. Now, I'm an independent contractor and have complete control over how to spend my time. I find myself dreaming more & more about time in the mountains. Ty.
