Tioga Pass: are passers thru allowed to drive thru YNP?

Post by audiorecordist »

Hi there,

I am planning on leaving the Bay Area this Friday 6/25/21 to do some hiking around Saddlebag Lake, and continue to the Eastern Sierra. Is the 120 open to people who are just trying to drive through Yosemite National Park? Last year, I heard reports that people were denied access to the highway (a real mess I must say), some were able to pass - some weren't. It was like border patrol lockdown power trip! (Just kiddin, I love my NPS Rangers honestly). It depended on who was working the kiosk that day I suppose. Anyway, I know a reservation is required to go into Yosemite, but is passing through still this ongoing issue? Does anyone know? Has anyone driven though without issue? Or is it still the same lameness from last year?

Yosemite NP:
Do I need a day-use reservation if I am just driving through the park?

You can drive through the park to reach a destination on the other side of the park without a reservation. The entrance station ranger will provide a time-stamped permit valid for the time needed to travel from entrance to entrance. You must drive the most direct route to exit the park; stopping is prohibited. Violating park regulations can result in a fine of up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail.

The park entrance fee still applies and provides access to visit Hetch Hetchy during open hours when it's not full.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
