Roads into Western Sierras

Post by JosiahSpurr »

Is there a place to get info. on roads on the western side? I looked through "Tech Probs, Q's, Comments & Sugg" but didn't see a related topic.

On one hand, general information would be nice to have. What I just discovered is that going up through California Hot Springs (E. of Ducor from Ave. 56/CA 65) has fewer sharp curves, less traffic, and less small town traffic/shopping.

On the other hand, timely information on seasonal road closures would be nice. This spring 3 people from Meetup hiked 8 miles from the closed gate to The Needles during a low snow year when it seemed like it was perfect weather to open the gate, especially to get (drive) Lower Peppermint Campground. ***

Call the National Forest office for the NF roads in the area in question. Check CalTrans for highways.

Sometimes gates are there because of washouts, trees down, or other issues - it's not just snow. Sometimes it's just because the road "always opens on {date}"

Questions and information are typically posted in either the Transportation To & From or Conditions Reports & Information forums. If you want info on a particular road or roads, and can't get what you need from CalTrans, NFS or NPS, then ask your question in one of those two forums before your trip. Good chance someone will know the status and respond.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
