N.F. Kings/Punchbowl/Rae Loop 7/4-7/7

Post by nhrpolitic13 »

1 - N.F. Kings at the Gauging station/Punchbowl trail junction on 7/4
0 - Punchbowl on 7/5
0 - Punchbowl to Disappointment, HFS L., and back towards Rae (cross-country traverse from Punchbowl to Disappointment)
1 - Rae Lake
3 - Post Corral Creek Crossing during the day on 7/7 and thereafter a 1-2 to the climb back to the ridgetop and chamberlain's camp on the way back to Maxon TH. [My companions may have drawn them off of me elsewhere, but Post Corral was the only place I felt compelled to apply the deet, simply so as to enjoy my lunch].

Bottom line, at the moment it's worse sitting on my patio in Fresno typing this - but no doubt this will change drastically in a week.

7/6/19-7/8/19 Cottonwood Pass - Siberian Pass Creek - Boreal Plateau - Rocky Basin Lakes - Big Whitney Meadow

Post by KathyW »

Horseshoe Meadows to Cottonwood Pass - 1
Cottonwood Pass - junction with Rock Creek Trail - 1
Junction with Rock Creek Trail to Siberian Pass Creek Trail - 2
Siberian Pass Creek Trail to Boreal Plateau - 1
Boreal Plateau to Rocky Creek Lakes - 1
Rocky Creek Lakes to Big Whitney Meadows - 1 to 3 (the only time I needed the head net)
Big Whitney Meadows - Cottonwood Pass - Horseshoe Meadows - 1

Keep in mind that I sprayed myself with DEET each morning before I started hiking and I was lucky to have a light breeze in some areas that might have been worse without the breeze.

Emigrant Wilderness out of Crabtree Trailhead 7/4-7/7

Post by tomba »

Route: The trail to Gem Lake, down to Buck Meadow Creek, up to Jewelry Lake, over the hill towards Gem lake, south of hill 8426T, down to the lower trail, cross West Fork Cherry Creek, up to Piute Lake, up Louse Canyon almost to Salt Lick Meadow, west across a gentle pass to Toms Canyon, down to Piute Meadow, and out.

Mosquitoes didn't bother us at all, except a little bit on the trail west of Camp Lake, when we didn't walk.

Day hike from Lake level up to 7800 feet and along the Flume trail. No mosquitoes at all. This is a very dry and sandy forested area.

Day hike from the Loney Meadow trailhead to Rock Lakes in the Grouse Lakes roadless area north of I-80 in Tahoe National Forest, elevations 6000 to 7200 feet. Lots of wet meadows and damp forest along the trail. Mosquitoes level 2 - got a couple of bites.
