Shepherd Pass inquiry

Post by bobby49 »

Does anybody have any status on Shepherd Pass? Specifically, is there snow on the eastern lip of the pass? If so, how much?

In July 2018, a slippery snow field was reported, and there were recommendations for ice axe and crampons. By the day before I started, I scoped it out from Highway 395, and all I could see was a narrow snow field near the very top, so I did not carry extra gear. When I got up there on the first afternoon, the snow was very easy to manage.

Caltopo Weekly High Res update was today. See link below. Readily shows where snow is around the pass that one may assess by switching between that and the 7.5m topo. Unless my sore right foot is still an issue will be over that pass about a month from now after the Rolling Stones concert.

First of all, the link doesn't work.

I can't get to any current detailed information for Shepherd Pass.

The reason the link didn't work is I apparently left out the "8" at the end when mouse selecting the link text. Just fixed.

Apparently there is a large snow field on Shepherd Pass now. Hopefully it will diminish by the time that I get there.

I think I know why there aren't any reports coming from Shepherd Pass.

To quote Yogi Berra: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

Caltopo Weekly High Res does not seem to be updating for several days now.

Looks like it updates every five days. So the next one will probably be the 27th.

If you don't know where you're going, then any path will get you there.
