Northern Desolation 6/17-6/20

Post by Pato »

Just returned from a 3 night trip in Northern Desolation. As per usual this time of year, mosquitoes varied a lot depending on elevation:

6400-6800': 2 - Nothing too bad
6800'-7600': 3 and rising. By the time you read this its probably already too late
7600'+: 1 - hardly anything

Mosquito Lakes 6/28-6/20

Mosquito Lakes (SEKI) 6/18-6/20
1/5 from Mineral King up to Mosquito Creek drainage, then 3/5 at lake #2, trending towards 4/5 on the hike down between lakes #1 and #2. It’s as if they named the creek and lakes for a reason....

Lyell Canyon 21-June

Post by c9h13no3 »

Unless we have a cold-snap, the skeeter free spring is likely over.

2/5 in Lyell Canyon below 9500 ft. Killed 4 with one slap around 5-6 pm.

I did the Gem lake loop as a day hike from Crabtree TH. Elevation 7-8k. I got a small swarm around me pretty much any time I stopped. However, with permethrin treated shorts and long sleeve shirt, plus deet on my legs, I think I got one bite all day.

Grouse Lakes - Loney Meadow to Rock Lake 6/21

Post by wildhiker »

Dayhiked up the creek from Loney Meadow to Upper Rock Lake in the Grouse Lakes roadless area on the Tahoe National Forest on Sunday, June 21. Elevations 6000 to 6700 feet. Mosquitoes were level 2 in the morning, when the air was still - had to swat them away hiking through damp areas. In the afternoon, after the breeze came up, saw very few mosquitoes.

They're out! Small, gnat like mosquitoes waiting in shady spots. They swarm and munch on you the second you stop moving! It was a warm day with no wind though. Bring your Deet! I would rate it as a 3-4

Bishop Creek / Dusy Basin 6/21-6/25

Post by freestone »

Bishop creek basin and Ducy Basin were both a 3-4 around June 21 but weather and wind came in on the 25th and cooled the air and mosquito action. There was also a Mayfly and Midge hatch happening at the same time which made it seem much worse than it really was, in fact, I did not get a single itchy welt for all the bugs that were in the air.

Virginia Pass / Green Lake 6/26

Post by LincolnB »

I climbed Twin Peaks yesterday from Green Creek. On the way up to Virginia Pass in the am there were sections at level 2, especially around Green Lake. Returning in the pm, most of that part was level 3 - non-stop slapping even tho I was hiking downhill at top speed.
