The snowpack (as of yesterday) south of Bishop is in patch skiing season (walking to a strip of snow, skiing down, walking out), at least for a day trip. Lots of people summiting Whitney with just boots. If you picked your spots wisely, there is backpacking to be had now without snow gear.

Laurel Lake and Vernon Lake at 11 miles both about 6.5k are trail accessible now though will get a few inches of snow Monday and kill many early mosquito larvae. After a few days that will be melted back out. A week plus after that while well before the Memorial Day onslaught, overall landscape refreshed with water with warmer weather, no new squeets yet, and green things rising even snow plants, offers an idea. An army of very hungry rainbows in the sizable Falls Creek behind Vernon making it look like a royal trout farm. Exciting white water both below and above the lake. Camp well out into clean open Sierra juniper granite west of lake. Yogi cannister.[/color]

Snow this weekend. Be careful if you are out there.
