Replying to an "In Progress SAR Incident"

Use this forum to stay informed on missing persons alerts, active SAR's and unfortunate hiker accidents we can all hopefully learn from. Any information you may have on a missing person, including first hand weather related information or any other insight (however little) may prove to be critical information to Law Enforcement / SAR in locating the person in question.

Replying to an "In Progress SAR Incident"

Post by maverick » Thu Oct 06, 2016 5:30 pm

Fellow Members,

The last few weeks I have been calling and requesting the agencies in all the counties encircling the Sierra, including Yosemite and SEKI, to alert us at the start of any SAR incident. Alerts will be then posted onto several other Sierra forums by myself and others, with a link back to the original thread here on HST. This was the initial purpose of starting this section.

This would allow the agencies to get information back from a specific segment like hikers, backpackers, fishing people, and climbers, most importantly reaching folks who may have information related to the missing person/s in question and then relaying it to the incident commanders in the field.

No such system is currently in place. The counties do not work together in putting out such information, besides using facebook and the news media, which unfortunately does not reach these outdoor communities in many instances.

Some agencies will post here directly. Others requested that they would rather e-mail me directly and that I post the information here myself. They have also requested that only information related to the case be posted to the thread, including possible suggestions for areas to be searched. Even if you did not see the individual/s in question, but were out in the area at the same time, what you saw or did not see can be important. Also uploading photos of the area in question, taken during the time the person went missing, could contain helpful clues.

Please do not post well wishes or anything other than information related to the search, this is very important so they do not have to read thru several irrelevant posts in a thread, agencies were very specific on this, and posts unrelated to the incident in progress will be deleted.
Yes, these are very strict perimeters, but time is of the essence and lives could matter, so please bear with us.

Hopefully with this new centralized system we will be able to assist SAR in relaying vital information to field incident commanders, and therefore increase the chances of fellow lost or injured backpackers/climbers to be reunited with their family and friends.

Thank you.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Have a safer backcountry experience by using the HST ReConn Form 2.0, named after Larry Conn, an HST member:

This is an excellent idea. Among the many great aspects of this site, I cannot think of a more important use of HST. Great thinking.
