New snow makes it 'Week of the Year' in the Sierra

(01-28) 18:55 PST -- This could be the best weekend of the year for a Tahoe ski getaway.

Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada received 1 to 5 feet of snow early this week (depending on where and on who is doing the measuring). That refreshed the ski and snowboard parks, yet with no storms in the weekend forecast, roads will be clear for the trip to the mountains and back. There is also a little football game Sunday that will diminish the crowds.

The biggest game in town at South Lake Tahoe is Heavenly, which has 25 of its 30 lifts operating to provide access to 78 runs and 4,700 of its 4,800 acres. At 10 a.m. Wednesday, the temperature was 20 degrees with clear skies providing gorgeous views of Lake Tahoe.

Kirkwood, near Carson Pass off Highway 88, about an hour south of South Lake Tahoe, is in top shape despite a down year for snowfall so far across California.

Kirkwood reported a snowpack that ranges from 69 to 113 inches, with 20 inches of fresh snow Monday. That has 65 of 67 trails and 100 percent of terrain open.

Ski parks have done their best to provide recreation despite a lean winter to start the season, with central Sierra resorts in the best shape.

It's been especially challenging at Mount Shasta Ski & Board, which reported only 16 to 20 inches of snowpack this week and about 35 percent of its runs open.

The No. 1 resort in California this winter has been Mammoth Mountain in the Eastern Sierra, 100 percent open for weeks. It received five feet in the big dump this week, giving the entire park 8 to 10 feet of snow.

Could this be the weekend for some snowshoeing? How'd the southern sierra fair in this recent storm?
