Permits for overnight backpacking and camping in the King Range Wilderness are sold out for #MemorialDayWeekend, but there are still opportunities to enjoy the spectacular King Range over the holiday. There are four campgrounds accessible by vehicle that offer space on a first-come, first served basis and a wide variety of trails open for day hiking. Permits are not needed for these adventures. You'll find information on campgrounds and trails on our website: on.doi.gov/2qdIIl3
If you're planning to backpack the Lost Coast Trail or elsewhere in the King Range Wilderness it's a good idea to get your permit early at http://www.recreation.gov.
The increasing backcountry use from our growing population and globalization of knowledge (aka internet) has now brought the crowds to the remote Lost Coast of northwest California.

Am heading up that way the day after tomorrow. Have a permit to start from Mattole Beach on June 20. Has been a LONG time since I have backpacked at sea level, and am looking forward to it. Will post a report when I get back.

Resource demand is a function of baseline population growth (state, national & global) and access/utilization rates. Denial is not just a river in Egypt, but the refusal to accept, understand (and potentially adapt to) facts.

Fact 1: At a 2% CAGR (compound annual growth rate), a given population will approximately double in 35 years. Examples: California will increase from 40m to 80m, US from 325m to 650m, global wide 7b to 14b.

Fact 2: In a competitive market driven economy, absent force or fraud, people and/or organizations (remember 'corporations are people too') are free to associate, assemble and/or utilize capital to pursue their own economic objectives. The state, acting as ward over public lands, can operate in concert to promote, manage or deny public resources used for private means.

Complaining about local communities using social media to drive seasonal business to their regions is missing the forest due to trees. The various federal, state and local agencies have no compunction about making available public lands for private use. Consider Burning Man:

https://burningman.org/event/preparation/ticket-money/

If you click through the link, you'll notice an itemization of expenses ie payments made for land access/use. BM also lists some other festivals that utilize the same business model. From firsthand experience, CA state parks & rec rents out the beach at least every other weekend during summer for some kind of beach concert, festival, trade show, you name it.

Once you know all the facts, you have essentially two choices: deal with it or complain. Dealing with it means accepting life as it's presented; complaining suggests living in a negative hell. Your choice.

The third choice, as always, is to choose to go somewhere else.

The fourth, to work with organizations to pursue negotiations with governing bodies, to effect change. Some people find that too taxing as it generally involves setting up an organization in the first place, but it's entirely possible with dedicated folks who decide to commit to that path. Commitment is difficult to find in the human race in general, however.
