Death Valley camping options

Looking for suggestions for dv camping with tents at the end of January.The less rv crowd ,the better.
Going there with dad and sister and the hotels there are 250$!!!

If you are driving something with a bit of ground clearance it opens up a TON of options as to where you can camp in Death Valley. Once off of the main paved roads and the busy day use areas, you can dispersed camp.

Does rental car mean high clearance?
No,basically have to stay near asphalt roads.

Texas Spring Campground is scenic, located close to main attractions and conveniences, but quiet with no generator use allowed. Terrain blocks noise and views of the civilized atmosphere at nearby Furnace Creek.

Note that Texas Springs and some other campgrounds in DV are not open due to staffing and maintenance issues. Check the DVNP website for the list of campgrounds affected, and the proposed opening g dates.

I recently rented a Ford Expedition and took it to the Shepard's Pass trailhead. Best decision on a rental car I ever made. Most rental companies do have SUV and 4 wheel drive options now.

There are decent spots back near the Hole in the Wall, especially on the right as you near the Hole itself. There is about 3 mi of gravel road access, but it didn't need special ground clearance a few years back IIRC. It's a pretty central location to the major sites like Badwater, Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells, Titus Canyon, etc. REI uses that location for their spring and fall day hiking outings.

Definitely do dispersed camping, if your crew is up for it. In my experience all of the official camping in DV sucks, although I have never been to Texas Spring. There are lots of places you can creep in with standard clearance, and you can generally camp anywhere off pavement and away from day use areas. The trade-off for no restrooms or water is unobstructed desert views that you have all to yourself.
