High Sierra Topix

Hi all,

Here are a few pics from my snowshoe hike this week along the High Coast Trail, in Skuleskogen National Park, northern Sweden. A very pretty corner of the world, similar to Acadia, Maine.

Thank you Bjorn for sharing these beautiful pictures! How long is this trail? Are the Northern Lights viewable from here? Is this park visited year round?

The trail is 79 miles and you can access it all year, even though it might be very cold mid-winter. Yes, if you’re in luck it’s good for northern lights. Chances increase if you travel a bit further north.

Amazing photos! And according to my Swedish friend (a US citizen for the last 40 years), the most amazing thing is the beautiful sun you show! He claims that Swedish winters are nothing but miserable cold and dark :-).

Wildhiker – yes, winters can be very dark, which is one (of many) reasons I love to spend time in California
But it’s a long country from north to south and in the south it’s pretty normal. In the far north where I’m from the sun literally doesn’t come up at all for a month mid-winter, ”payback” is in summer when it doesn’t set at all for a month or so.
This time of year is awesome because the change from dark to light is very fast – every day is about ten minutes longer than the previous one.

Were you nervous, standing beneath that giant icicle?/"Sword of Damocles?"
Is this by any chance in the area where the wolves are beginning to return to? It looks like a forest they could survive in. What other species of wildlife live there-- Wolverine? Moose/Elk? Lynx? And finally, how cold was it?
