Trip Report Wyoming 2 9/21/20 to 9/26/20

Post by robertseeburger »

This is a second trip report to the one just posted. We escaped the tremendous wind and drove to another area of Wyoming that neither of us had ever visited before...the weather was cold but no precipitation which was good.

The trail started off relatively flat.. lots of both horse manure and cow manure..scene nice but not spectacular.
1 (49).jpeg
A lake shortly along the way..

1 (50).jpeg
In this area, you had better know your trail numbers.. they dont seem to have destination names on the map..just trail numbers.
1 (51).jpeg
Very soon, we saw a moose.. a big bull moose..first one I had seen while backpacking.
1 (81).jpeg
And shortly thereafter a baby moose.. walked right into our camp. You can see..he was just curious about us..
1 (82).jpeg
A big lake we encountered next..
1 (52).jpeg
We camped and fished there. It had medium to large lake trout and small brook trout. Gary landing a lake trout.
1 (53).jpeg
1 (54).jpeg
The trail was pretty good. We left the trail here at this bridge.
1 (55).jpeg
We went cross country to a series of lakes..the first one..
1 (56).jpeg
And the second lake up..
1 (57).jpeg
The cross country travel was relatively easy.. a pretty good use trail, but some talus..

Continuing trip..

There is a basin of 10 lakes here.. We camped between the 4th and 5th lakes up..

A view of the 4th lake
1 (90).jpeg
We saw another bull moose ..this one a little smaller. Notice the ears of another moose next to him. The ears is all we saw.

1 (83).jpeg
A view of the 5th lake up..pretty spectacular
1 (60).jpeg
And cant resist a similar picture.
1 (61).jpeg
We fished here.. Gary with a decent golden..nothing like the ones from the prior trip, but still very nice.
1 (62).jpeg
And another
1 (63).jpeg
and one more
1 (64).jpeg
We went to the upper lakes as well. We had the basin all to ourselves and one other brother/sister from Wisconsin.
1 (65).jpeg
Two trout side by side...one on flies one on a spinner.
1 (66).jpeg
Gary likes waterfalls.
1 (84).jpeg
A view of the lake below the one where we camped.

I also caught some decent goldens..
Here is one..
1 (67).jpeg
One of the higher lakes in the basin.
1 (69).jpeg
The highest lake in the basin..
1 (70).jpeg
A view down to the fifth lake in the basin

1 (71).jpeg
A couple of nice 16 inch goldens ..we ate a couple of great trout dinners.
1 (72).jpeg
Gary trying his best.
1 (73).jpeg
A view of 3 trout ready for the feast.
1 (74).jpeg
What the cooking process looks like.. 2 stoves.. poaching..
1 (75).jpeg
The meat was quite red..just like in the sierras.
1 (76).jpeg
And we found a table next to camp for the feast..with thyme, lemon pepper, salt, dill.
1 (77).jpeg
We left before a storm came in..we could tell the weather was about to change.
1 (78).jpeg
1 (80).jpeg
Overall, it was good to get away.. Saw Moose, caught some nice goldens..
Wyoming is a great place to backpack. In some ways it is very similar to the Sierras. In some ways it is different.
I have now been there once a year for 5 straight years..

I am disappointed though that I didnt get a Kings Canyon trip this year!

Really nice repot. I loved the Goldens.
Thanks for taking the time to put your report together.

I've rarely seen lake trout being caught on the fly. Were they cruising the shoreline like other trout do in high country lakes? Thanks for sharing these photos and your reports! You make retirement look fun.

Matt, the lake trout were abundant, close to shore ...about six feet out..just where there was a break in depth. They took both spinners and flies readily..very easy to catch actually. We almost didnt fish, but decided late in the day of a backpacking day to give it a shot and were glad we did.
It was kind of fun..different sizes and a few brookies too.

Bob, as usual great posts on your two Wyoming adventures. I like your fish photos. It certainly helps to be fishing with a buddy so the photos can be quick and the person with wet hands can release the fish expeditiously. I especially liked, the comparison when staging the photo to make the fish look bigger. While it may be true that photos do not lie, inflating the scenery, flowers, wildlife, and fish a little bit does add something to hook the imagination in the story. Nicely done. Now, how tall was that first moose?

I did not see where this trip was. Did you mention it?

I am trying to pencil out a trip in the Bighorns to/from the BWCA. Wondering if this is Bighorns.

Thanks for the report; it is really nice to see such fishing! And I'm glad you let on where it was, I was just about to spend a lot of fun but pointless time trying to match some of the mountains in your pics to ones of ours from the Winds. Those are some very nice peaks in the background; did you climb up anything Robert? Cheers, Ian.
