4/19-21 Day hiking on the Coast

Post by Wandering Daisy »

Not a backpack, but we did a trailer trip to MacKerrikher State Park, stayed two nights and also hiked around the Mendocino headlands. It was VERY windy! And very few people were hiking. There were a few hardy fishermen out in the surf near our campsite at West Pine campground. We found this state park to be very dog friendly compared to most state parks. I had on my GPS watch and it said all my little hikes added up to 10 miles one day! It made me wish I was backpacking the Lost Coast.

Really beautiful
"On this proud and beautiful mountain we have lived hours of fraternal, warm and exalting nobility. Here for a few days we have ceased to be slaves and have really been men. It is hard to return to servitude."

We like that park a lot. And it's always a treat to visit the Botanical Gardens in Mendocino, too. And good food. hmmm. we need to go again.

Your "Interesting vegetation is the infamous "Skunk Cabbage." Here's some botanical info on it:

Lysichiton americanus, also called western skunk cabbage, yellow skunk cabbage, American skunk-cabbage or swamp lantern, is a plant found in swamps and wet woods, along streams and in other wet areas of the Pacific Northwest, where it is one of the few native species in the arum family.

Thanks WD for the nice tip on a dog-friendly State Park. Beautiful ocean scenes too.
Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.
