The two stories have a (very loose) tie- together.
The photo of the first engine crossing the bridge in the second story is Tahoe NF Engine 72, normally stationed at Truckee.

Yes, amazing. Original thread was locked so I couldn't comment. Kudos to the SAR teams. Interesting that the PLB didn't work?

PLBs don't work as well as people like to think. A good tool to have but not perfect by any means.

1. It is electronic device--not fool proof

2. In couloir pretty much like being in a chimney not much of a range for the signal to get out. Need to understand the limits of the technology. Had one person descended to the bottom and into a more open area the plb would likely have been a successful tool.

Don't forget to sing "Kumbaya".

It is a fundamental philosophy. Don't die stupid. Assess risks, think a bit and do the right thing.

Regarding PLB's: among all emergency signalling devices, that's the least reliable. Problem is inherent in the technology: bandwidth available, protocol for determining location (requires, ideally, a couple of satellite passes and uses Doppler effect to determine 2 solutions, then chooses best), and even that calculated location is often off by 1/2 mile or more. Also, as here, no confirmation that signal connected. Which is all to say if you use one, also send someone out for help and, better, get a SPOT, InReach or SatPaq where you know the message was sent and received.
