Cool ghost town/quarantine story

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Cool ghost town/quarantine story

How to quarantine in a ghost town:

Anyone here ever heard of Cerro Gordo? Looks to be due east of Lone Pine.

Sure. Cerro Gordo is very obvious on the map, along with the road that runs up to it from Keeler.

Was up there maybe 35-40 years ago. A fun exploratory trip...I believe a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
Not sure how it might have changed over the years...probably picked over considerably until Underwood bought it.

There are other similar interesting old mining destinations in those mountains. Read up on Manson.

I hiked to the summit in June 2017. I knew the town went up for sale, but hadn't heard the outcome. Thanks for the link to that story on the new owner. At the time I was there, you had to check in at the town's little store, sign a liability waiver, and pay $10 to walk up the road to the summit. The peak is on the Sierra Club's Great Basin Peaks List. Here's the SummitPost page:

Very interesting article, Oleander. Thank you for sharing.

And that has made all the difference.
