Nobody wants us recreating near their small Sierra town

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

What are we at now, 33 million Americans unemployed? Many to have lost their jobs forever? Are we going to hit a 20% unemployment rate?
California has a projected $54 billion budget deficit? Don't people understand the long term ramifications of all this?

This basically can't work. I'm not okay with not doing SAR just because someone "accepted" that condition. If we can save a life, we should. Likewise, we shouldn't ask people to try to make that risk assessment themselves... individual risks are low, but population risks are certain.
yosemite samizdat wrote: Mon May 11, 2020 10:49 am At this point, there have been numerous international studies indicating outdoor activity has virtually zero risk. The article notes that Mono and Inyo Counties believe they now have adequate surge capacity. The only specific risk the article cites is supposed shortages at the grocery stores, which are dubiously claimed to be caused by visitors.
Yes, outdoor/open air transmission is almost certainly a non issue, from what I have seen in studies. Even shopping is very minimal risk to the patrons, but fairly HIGH risk to the workers, as they are getting so much more exposure, for longer amounts of time.

Offices, homes, restaurants, bars, churches, tradeshows, sporting events, public transit, etc... on the other hand? These appear to be very effective transmission opportunities.

I am hopeful we're working towards a better understanding of risks and transmission vectors that can allow more activity while establishing a reign on virus spread until vaccination can provide herd immunity.

For the issue of rescue, transport all who then need medical treatment to the person's home hospital, patient, paying the cost. Not ideal, but do-able.

Backpackers seem to be collateral damage due to the risk brought in by the regular tourists who spend both a lot of time and money in the eastern Sierra communities. One could access the high Sierra from the west, a day or two longer approach, but the problem with that is the permit system. Unfortunately I doubt the Forest Service would or even could shuffle permits to the west side trailheads. At this point we are not even sure if ANY Sierra permits will be issued at all.

Personally, I am avoiding all this and headed for Wyoming this summer.

Check out Alberts right next door to Jolly Kone, they share the same parking lot, if you haven't before. Great sandwiches

We're not all in this together. Be smart. Pick where you want to go and how long to be there. Don't touch your face until you get home and wash up. (Things we should have been doing this all along anyway. I know I do.)

It better not be a long process. :soapbox:
I would say it is exactly because we are a society and we are all in this together that we need to do just what you say above.
