South Lake Cellular Service? (Verizon)

South Lake Cellular Service? (Verizon)

Post by rwilliams2000 »

Greetings,
Anyone know what the (Verizon) cell service is like in the South Lake area outside of Bishop? I'm looking at the feasibility of parking at South Lake and calling an Uber to drive me to North Lake in preparation for hiking the North Lake/South Lake loop via the JMT. That way when I finish I'll be at my car. Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,
Randy

I'm on call for work a lot, so checking coverage maps to see where I can go is pretty standard. They're pretty close to accurate.

EDIT - And in general, in the mountains you get coverage on ridges & peaks, lose it in the canyons. Or around Mammoth Lakes, you're covered if you can see Mammoth Mountain :P

You might not want to count on getting Uber service in this area. The Bishop Creek route on the ESTA system (Eastern Sierra Transportation Authority) is running this summer; they might not run ALL the way to South Lake due to the ongoing road construction; see this link:

Perhaps consider getting their route schedule “App” (or phoning them) to get the latest information.

Thank you for all the feedback, I appreciate it. I’m reviewing my options and will look into ESTA as well.

We’ve done Sabrina Basin trips a bunch of recent years and Verizon coverage drops somewhere on the drive up, before the South Lake turnoff. I typically shut the phone off or go airplane mode at that point and don’t bother trying until we come out. There may be spots where it could connect after the drop point, but I stopped trying after the first year.
