Maverick's 2017 Annual HST Meet-up

A forum to initiate member meet-up. Looking for a hiking/climbing/fishing/skiing/etc. partner, or are you planning a trip where you wouldn't mind having some company? Last minute invites can be just as fun as a well-planned group trip (sometimes even better) so don't be shy! And be sure to post a trip report to the appropriate forum when you get back.

Maverick's 2017 Annual HST Meet-up

Post by maverick »

Hello Ladies and Gents,

Back to Kings Canyon we go this year to a very special place that not many folks get a chance to see, especially since the SHR does not pass through it, therefore traffic through this basin is extremely lite.
Numerous approaches are available, most direct from the west is Roads End and from the east is Taboose Pass.
For those members who are into fishing there are several lakes that you can visit coming in from Taboose which would make for a highly memorable trip, these include Striped Mtn Basin and Bench Lake.
Climbers have dozens of peaks to climb, including Striped Mtn, Split Mtn, and Arrow Peak which is right at the Meet-up location.
Alternate backpacking approaches/exits exist, for example via the Muro Blanco, Window Creek drainage, White Fork Drainage, and numerous longer trips that could include Amp>Dumbbell>Lake Basin or Rae Lakes>60 Lakes>Gardiner Basin.

Meet-up Location: Arrow Creek Basin

Dates: 7/27 (Thur) - 7/28 (Fri)

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

How do you get there from Taboose? Head over the shoulder/pass/col next to Arrow peak?

Where is the White fork drainage?

Has anyone been down Window peak creek to Woods creek?

This could be a cool trip to link up either Gardiner/PCT & descend out of Baxter.

Are you totally set on Arrow rather than Lake basin/Cartridge? That would be easier (relatively speaking) for those interested in doing a section of the SHR from either the west or east side.

Looks hard no matter how you slice it - trying to keep attendance below 10? \:D/

Yes http://www.highsierratopix.com/high-sie ... WtY6s.dpuf

One drainage east of the Window Creek drainage.

Yes, have used Explorer Pass from the north, White Fork Saddle from the east, also have used White Fork Pass too.
This could be a cool trip to link up either Gardiner/PCT & descend out of Baxter.
It would be a great trip.

Yeap, you could do the first part of the SHR and instead of using FLP to exit Lake Basin use Cartridge Pass and then up to Arrow Peak via Bench Lake.

Sorry it turn out that way, if everyone who confirmed that they could make it had shown up, you would have had 3 more people at your assigned campsite and 3 more people higher up in the basin. This location we allow everyone to be in the same basin, no climbing needed to get to another campsite Gazelle. :)

You know it's a good spot when there are no Panoramio photos on Google Earth.

Any idea if there are fish in the basin itself?

I did Window Lake from Woods a few years ago. It is tedious and a bit miserable but not hard. I day-hike to the top of the drainage and it looks like you can drop over into Arrow Lakes OK. By the way I caught a big fish in Window Lake. Also ran into a herd of seven mountain sheep, up real close!

I camped 200 meters from that spot two years ago. I went over Pyramid Peak, although I don't recommend that exact route on the east side of the peak. See viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11720&p=89015 for more info. Started at Sawmill Pass, then Pinchot Pass, Crater Pass, and Whitefork Saddle. Closed the loop by going over Arrow Pass, Cartridge Pass, Vennacher Col, Pinchot Pass, and Armstrong Col. See map for pass locations and descriptions.

I'm eyeballing that steep chug up Arrow Creek thinking it's probably pretty gnarly. Those lines are awful close together. Looks a lot like that one route to the Diving Board over in Yosemite.

Instead of going up Arrow Creek, I think you can get there by going up the next creek east, west from Window Peak. See the points labeled "Arrow Peak Descent 1" and "Arrow Peak Descent 2" on this map.
