I've also covered my cooler with a big white towel, and then soaked the towel in water. If you have ready access to water, just soak it once in a while and it keeps the contents of the cooler amazingly long. Like having a big evaporative cooler surrounding your ice chest. Keep it in the shade and you really have long lasting cold.

My roommate has a Igloo Marine cooler. We have replaced the crappy plastic hinges about 8 times, and I finally just bought some metal cabinet hinges and fixed it for good. Great cooler, poor hinges.
