Staying at a lake east of Karsarge pass is sometimes logistically better than going out if you want a free and scenic place to sleep I often do this rather than driving home tired all night. Or if you prefer to not stay in town and still have time to do the next overnight trip.

I always camp at Onion Valley and start super early in the morning while it is cool and dark (maybe 4 a.m.). I will get over Kearsarge Pass by dawn, and then get over Glen Pass before noon. That gets me into the Sixty Lake Basin early enough to grab a primo camp site near the last lake in. If you can handle that much, then go bag Mount Cotter the next day.
