This is a lesson for all of us. I am glad no one was killed during both falls. Also the 911 call. It was routed to a large metro area, whose staff had no idea of what the PCT was, or where it was. The conditions this year are frightful. Thanks for posting this Wandering Daisy.

Another PCT hiker who had extensive snow experience, went over that section, without ice axe but with crampons (not micro-spikes) and got through the San Jacinto's just fine without detours. I think the issue here is inexperience on snow. This is just the start. I suspect the same problem will exist once the early starters get into the Sierra, similar to 2017 and 2011.

Here we go, get ready for the rescues! Its going to be an interesting year on the trail.

Seeing the same here currently in the Whitney zone already, inexperience, wrong gear, bad decision making = rescue or recovery

please be safe everyone out there and preach safety in this year of snow and dangerous creek crossings

My brother is hiking the PCT this year. I had him come down to LA this past weekend so that we could go up into conditions like that and get him some experience with the gear and terrain. Conditions are definitely dangerous right now. We turned back on the Cucamonga Peak only to find out that a day earlier a couple went missing on a dayhike there and they've now been missing for 3 nights. Scary stuff.

Is he vlogging or blogging his hike? I’d like to follow his adventure if that’s possible.

No, he's not planning on doing any live blogging. He's a journalist by trade though and he's considering writing a book about the trip after the fact.

This is a good thing. More hikers should try it. Less blogging/vlogging/social media. A breath of fresh air. Maybe a PCT w/o social media challenge? It might catch on! :)

@Schmalz,
I heard on the news this morning that a couple was rescued locally who were missing for 5 days. They were in good shape. I wonder if it was the same couple?
If you don't know where you're going, then any path will get you there.
