Everyone's thoughts on what's really causing fires

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Interesting article. As fire seasons get longer worldwide, demand for scarce aerial firefighting resources increase.
Many companies send the large aircraft and helicopters to southern hemisphere in the off-season. But the seasons are beginning to overlap.

Also interesting in the article is Australian environmentalists are pushing for more aggressive firefighting in the backcountry to help preserve their natural heritage -- exactly the opposite of environmentalists here.

Could just take the lines down. How does that work for residents? Can't have it both ways.

It's more likely that the power will be turned off for a period of 24 hours or less. at least, that's what happened last year: periods of very dry weather, very dry forests, and very high winds.

Good (and lengthy) article. Lots of interesting examples on both sides of the debate. Definitely worth reading:
In California, the debate over prescribed burns is complicated by a deadly history with wildfires that have grown quickly out of control, the state’s stringent environmental regulations, fear of liability lawsuits and infringement on property rights, and the huge swaths of federal forestland with their own management rules and oversight.
