2019 Mosquito Reports

I killed a mosquito sitting on the porch of the Kennedy Meadows store, while drinking a coke.

But while chilling at the river, there were none. There were zero on our climb of Leavitt, obviously.

Level 2?

Not sure of the elevation of the Kennedy Meadows store- but your report sounds promising C9. We'll take the beta light.... and headnets just in case. Thanks, Ian.

South Fork of the San Joaquin River below 8.5k, many streamlets from melting snow above, very green and flowery. 1 or 2 in dry areas, 2 or 3 in wet meadows and stream willow seeps, ie Blaney Meadows, Aspen Meadow. Along most of river 1 or 2. Dragonflies and damselflies have been out in force for a few weeks keeping numbers low.

Over 6 days I put DEET on hands/face just 4 times and got bit on hands and wrist a few times, usually while too busy working my camera. In most areas outside marsh and meadows was not an issue except late afternoon. Mid days would jump into cold river then laid out in sun on stream side bedrock without any.

Level 1: I saw 3 sluggish, disinterested mosquitoes while setting up dinner around 5:30 pm at Kerrick Meadows, so they are starting to wake up, but a nonfactor currently.
Level 2 at Barney Lake when we stopped at the beach for lunch.
Level 3-4 at the Twin lakes backpacker's parking at midday; they were big, aggressive and numerous.

Courtright 1-2 depending on wind.
Cliff trailhead to Nelson Lake: trail dry areas 1-2, trail wet areas 2-4, Nelson lake-mornings 2-3, day 1-2, evenings 1-2. As the snow melted, the bugs got worse.

The fish were gorging themselves and feeding all day due to the recent ice off and bug activity.

Emigrant Wilderness, Relief Reservoir and above, zero bugs. Lucy the Border Collie really struggled to get uphill, but she managed to find some snow to eat for the first time in her life. During the night of July Fourth it got cold, and the water in her dog bowl froze. However, she makes a good 44-pound footwarmer.

July 1- Piute Lake, 0
July 2- Bear Lake, 0 , but 1 down at Crabtree TH (still have to walk 0.7 miles to the trailhead)
July 3- Inlet area to Kennedy Lake and higher, 0
July 4- Lower end of meadow below Kennedy Lake, near the old cabin 1-2 dusk only

Level 1 just in the forested area in the first mile out from the Pine Creek Trailhead. Level 0 from there on: Pine Creek Pass... LaSalle Col... Granite Bear Pass... and back around through Granite Park.

Level 2-3 in lower Sawmill Canyon around 7,000 feet elevation.

Level 1 by Sawmill Meadows at around 8,400 elevation; saw a few but no bites. Same above.

Level 0 in Woods Lake Basin. Not melted yet, zero mosquitoes.
