middle palisade in a push - 9/8/19

Post by bran_daid »

crin and I put an attempt on middle pal two years ago and it didn't go very well. we had arrived at the base of the northeast face in the morning feeling a bit tired from steep hiking and wallowing in softening snow on the approach. after wandering up shifting steep choss (off route) for a bit and pulling off a few very scary lose blocks, we decided we weren't having fun and went down. we resolved to come back with better route beta and fitness.

two years later, armed with more information about the route and stronger legs, we set out from glacier lodge at 315am. the sometimes-complicated creek crossing a few miles up the trail was beautifully bridged by downed trees and we crossed with neither stress nor wet feet. celebrating this small victory, we felt a cautious optimism about the day forming. breezy pre-dawn conditions kept us cool on the way up, and with light packs the miles floated by. just as the sun peeked over the white mountains to the east, the face came into view. watching the beautiful gendarmes of middle palisade get kissed by the day's first rays, our stoke was high. we stowed our trekking poles at the top of the moraine beneath the northeast face and started up. a rising traverse on nice flakes led to a chimney. at the top of the chimney a well marked trail skirted beneath a granite tower and led to a beautiful gully of fun 3rd class blocks. an hour later there was no more mountain to climb. we descended into building smoke clouds from the taboose fire.

Great video, nicely edited. Ugh, that smoke. I was further west, and saw it boiling up. Watching closely https://tools.airfire.org/websky for this weekend.
