Safety Closure (Public Health Emergency)

Coronavirus, the virus responsible for the disease COVID-19, has caused a public health emergency as declared by Mariposa County, the State of California, and the United States Government. In consultation with local, county, and state public health officials and guidance provided by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and in order to maintain the safety of park visitors, employees, and residents while allowing management and administrative operations to continue, the Superintendent is designating the entirety of Yosemite National Park as closed to all but residents and authorized employees of the National Park Service (NPS), park concessioners, and partners. This order remains in effect until further notice.

By order of the Superintendent of Yosemite National Park and under authority of Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 1.5(a) and Section (a)(1):

Starting Friday, March 20, 2020 at 3 pm, Yosemite National Park is closed to all individuals with the exception of:

Residents of all communities within the legislative boundary of Yosemite National Park.
Residents of Yosemite West who are using NPS roads to access their residences.
Authorized NPS employees.
Authorized contractor of the NPS.
Authorized employees or contractors of Yosemite Hospitality, The Ansel Adams Gallery, NatureBridge, Yosemite Conservancy, the United States Postal Service, or other authorized park partners.

Residents are defined as 1) employees who have been assigned a government or concessioner housing unit within Yosemite National Park by an organization that is authorized to do so and 2) owners or long-term (28 days or greater) renters of houses in Section 35 (Wawona), Aspen Valley, Yosemite West, or Foresta. Authorized employees are individuals who are actively engaged in work directed by a supervisor or management official of the NPS, authorized NPS concessioner, or partner who have operations based in Yosemite National Park. The presence of individuals who are not included in the above definitions, to include guests of residents and authorized employees, is prohibited.
The closure area will be monitored to ensure compliance. Your cooperation in complying with this temporary restriction is greatly appreciated. Please see attached map for more information.

This designation will remain in place until rescinded.
I don’t need a goal destination. I need a destination that meets my goals.

Just returned home after visiting Yosemite Valley today. Encouraged to visit by the recent removal of an entrance fee. Now read the Park was closed this afternoon. Things are changing quickly!

Actually, today the Valley had quite a few visitors. I got the impression that most were active "locals" with a strong calling to this majestic creation. The weather was delightful. It seemed likely many more would visit tomorrow (Saturday). Well, now we know that will not be the case.

The snow in the area was more than I encountered on visits to the Valley in December, January, and February. Good news for California water supplies this summer.

In my January and February visits, the novovirus was an issue in Yosemite Valley, now the coronavirus is the issue (much more significantly). The Village Market really seemed to be taking the 6' distancing policy seriously. Apparently, there was a cap on the number of people allowed in the store at one time. Outside I saw a short line. As one shopper exited, the next in line then entered the store.

Wishing everyone safety and good health.

Jim
