Trinity Alps: Stuart Fork to Stonewall Pass Connector?

Post by kpeter »

I was looking over the maps and see a trail that goes north from the road near the Trinity Alps Resort and seems to connect through trails and road to the Stoney Ridge trail. Is this a viable connector? If it is, it would enable a loop up the Stuart Fork, up Deer Creek, over Deer Creek Pass and then south over Stonewall Pass and back down to the resort.

Doesn't look like it's possible to use the trail anymore:

From 2012 (see Elk Gulch Trail):

Originally 2015 but updated for 2020:

May have to walk the road from the resort to Stuart Fork and then back from Stoney Ridge.

Thank you rightstar! Those are excellent resources. That is a pretty definitive answer that the trail no longer exists. Better to know now when planning than when out there. And low elevation Trinity Alps is not the kind of place you want to be bushwhacking.

However, I did find this reddit thread about a trip report in 2018 about a fellow who did this exact loop. He describes coming down logging roads from the Stoney Ridge trail back to Trinity Resort, but doesn't mention the Elk Gulch trail or very much about the details of the ending.
