4-night, 5-day trip on the trails in Sequoia Natl. Park

Post by DWSHiker »

Hello everyone - this is my first-time posting.

My two brothers-in-law (BILs) and I will be traveling to Sequoia the last week of September - we are between 55 and 61 yrs of age; in good physical shape, but we are from the flatlands of Indiana. I've been to Sequoia-Kings Canyon several times when I lived in CA, but the BILs have never seen the Big Trees. I favor near the tree-line or above. One BIL and I have lots of backpacking experience; I have some Sierra backpacking experience. It will be the first backpacking trip for one BIL (although he is probably in better physical shape than I). :)

So, this is my preliminary plan: arrive late afternoon, spend night in Grant Grove cabin- spend one, maybe 2 nights on trails in Redwood Canyon. Go back to car, drive to Wolverton and spend 1 to 3 nights along Lakes Trail toward Pear Lake. Spend last night in Grant Grove cabin. I've tried to allow for elevation acclimation, easy to moderate trails, no more than about 2500 feet elevation-gain in a day, no more than about 5 or 6 miles in a day with significant elevation gain, maybe up to 8 miles with less than 1000 feet elevation gain in a day.

What do you think of my preliminary plan and do you have other suggestions?

I would highly recommend Seville, and especially Lost Lake area in place of
the Redwood hike.
Both have bear boxes, so you will not need bear canisters, and you will not have
a lot of company either.
The Pear Lake hike is nice, especially if you do a day hike up to Moose Lake
and/or the Tablelands area(above tree line).
I personally would go to one of these area's instead of running back to the car
and driving to another, both offer several days worth of exploring.
The Lost Lake hike offers several gorgeous lakes some next to the trail some
off trail (Sheep Camp Lakes).
The Lost Lake hike is in the trees, and the Pear Lake hike from Pear Lake on is
tree-line and above, so you have to choose which one is more of a priory.
Also weather wise the end of Sept can sometimes be iffy, in which case the
Lost Lake hike would offer more protection/cover from a storm.

Thanks Maverick - good advice. I would prefer not to have to come back to the car between hikes like you said. But I'm trying to give my BILs a good dose of Sequoia tree exposure. Does the Lost Lake trail go through Sequoia groves? I suppose we could take in some of the big tree displays in and around Grant Grove before or after a longer loop hike. :-k

Take on a hike in Crescent Meadows area, and check out the Giant Forest Museum area
which will give you a good dose of big trees.
