2013 Fire & Smoke Reports

Post by TehipiteTom »

Haven't seen a thread on this here (mods, if there is one feel free to consolidate) and sadly I think we're going to need it. For starters, it looks like the Aspen Creek fire near Mammoth Pool is having a severe impact on the central Sierra (Mammoth, Bear Lakes area, etc.). The smoke is so thick in some places that one party near Lake Italy lost all sense of direction (see caddis' post in the Backpacking board).

Any on-the ground reports on smoke conditions this year?

I've read there are a dozen other small fires from lightening strikes but they aren't attempting to suppress them due to manpower issues. (Budget cuts to pay for a $100,000,000 vacation in Africa ;) ) This would suggest high elevation. Has anyone seen the smoke from any of these?

You can find updates on Inciweb, it looks like most of the other fires are very small:

SEKI fires: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/article/3551/19358/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Aspen fire updates are here: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3552/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Latest Aspen fire update: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/sierra/ne ... RDB5429354" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Please chime in if you were effected by this fire or any others down the line (hopefully
not). Photos of the smoke in the area would be great so folks planning on backpacking
to the area will be advised and can change their plans accordingly. Thanks

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

I was at Rock Creek Lake yesterday and it was real smokey in the afternoon. Today was real clear I suspect b/c of no wind.

As of 7 am today the fire has grown to 4500 acres and is 0% contained. :(
