Eastern Sierra FS Campsites in winter

Post by Seldom »

I apologize if this has been asked before, but does anyone know if any eastern Sierra USFS campsites are open during the winter? From their website, it seems as though only Grandview is actually open.
If not; what do you normally do as a basecamp for dayhikes during winter?

A lot of BLM campgrounds are open as well as county run. Glacier View in big pine is open and so is Keoughs hot springs. Horton creek, the pit( by pleasant valley). Tenimaha, baker creek, and more I can't think of right now.
I'm no suture for my future.

Hi Seldom,

Welcome to HST! Here are the options available, as you mentioned many
campgrounds will be closed but there are lower elevation options available.
Also dispersed camping is a great option which I have used many times.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Have a safer backcountry experience by using the HST ReConn Form 2.0, named after Larry Conn, a HST member: http://reconn.org
