Buck Lakes Campsites

Post by Jim Lowe »

Hi All,

I think it's my first time posting in this forum. It's been some years anyway.

If the weather holds, I'm going to do an overnighter to the Buck Lakes in the Emigrant. As its an overnighter and I want to get in and out as smoothly as possible, I'm looking for some beta on good campsites on either Upper or Lower Buck. (So I don't spend an hour or two looking for a site, as I tend to do.)

I usually pick safety as my top criteria for a site, with drainage and low mosquito count next.

Thanks.

Hi Jim,
If your hiking up from Woods lake there is a nice camp site rite at the end of lower Buck, a little ways off the trail . It's hard to describe exactly where it is. When you see lower buck, head back down the trail from where you came, and can't see the lake. Then head off trail to the left. It's a nice flat spot near the end of the lake.
If your coming from Deer lake, head left when you get to the lake, and there are some overused camp sites up a ways, but they tend to be Mosquito ridden . Your only other option is crossing the stream between upper and lower. Head up along the east side and there are a few and far between sites along upper Buck. All and all the camping spots aren't great, but it's a beautiful lake.
Hope that helps, have a fun trip !!

There is a camp among the granite near the falls between Upper and Lower Buck. There are also 3 peninsulas on the east side of Upper Buck that have nice camps on them as well.

Thanks. I'll be coming from Wood. Probably camp at the lower lake for speed and convenience sake.

Cool. Thanks! This will be helpful. I blew out my knee so I didn't go this weekend. Probably getting hot now, so maybe in Fall.
