In the early 1980s we saw a local Piute family with a Ford Country Squire station wagon, camped near the springs just below Baker Lake. Dad brought along a shovel, sledge hammer, stake, rope, and block & tackle to extricate if stuck, but said he rarely ever got stuck. I was amazed.

Green Lakes and Baker Lakes were historical summering grounds for the area Piute population, to escape Owen's Valley heat. Coyote Flats was forested, as were other East Side locations, until white men and mining interests cut the forests for rail ties, mine shaft framing, shelter, and fuel for the pumps and stamp mills.
