Baxter Pass Trail

Post by Heyduke#2 »

Last month I did a section of Baxter Pass Trail. The trail is in generally good shape. The 2nd water crossing is a bit challenging, due to the other side of it being eroded from a past flash flood. You’ll have to ford the creek, then grab on to “Texas Rose” to pull yourself out of the creek bed, then climb up a 10 foot embankment to reach the trail. Gloves and poles are recommended for this crossing. There are a few downed trees above the second crossing, one of which is over-hanging, which poses a challenge, but not a threat. The snow line started around 10k feet. The 3rd creek crossing can be simply forded. The trail has some overgrown vegetation above 3rd crossing, but isn’t too challenging. Summit meadow had firmly packed snow and Oak Creek was flowing good enough to draw from through the snow. Above Summit Meadow the creek was snow bound and the snow load was loose and deep.
I attempted Mt. Mary Austin, but fell short.
In the last month, with the rising temp’s, it can be deduced that the creek crossings may be more challenging and the snow line has receded some. This trail isn’t visited very often and offers a good challenge with spectacular views and solitude.
Enjoy.

Thanks for the report. Permitted for a late August start and have never started at Baxter.
