What bird (?) is making this sound in YNP (Hetch Hetchy)

I’ve heard this sound every time I’ve hiked over Moraine Ridge in Hetch Hetchy (Jack Main trail). It sounds like someone blowing over the top of a bottle, low and thrumming. I’m assuming it’s a bird of some sort, but it always seems to be coming from someplace that I can’t see.

Does anyone have any idea what this is?

Thanks! Looks like that bird is also known as the Sooty Grouse: https://ebird.org/species/soogro1

Now we need some Sooty Grouse recipes.

Butter, sage and a skillet. Salt and pepper as needed. the plucking is the hard part.

Is that broad leaf sage or narrow leaf sage?

If you have to ask, you don't know how to cook. :D

Damn why do they insist on changing names? In my day they were Blue Grouse. Once when camped at Seville lake I tracked the sound about a half mile up the hill to the sw. Finally spotted it up in a tree. Every year at roaring river there would be a mother grouse with about 6 chicks in the small meadow adjacent to the station. By the end of the season there would be one or two.

Still Blue Grouse in my take. Hard to hit with a .22 as I evidently suck. Glad I drilled out my stock and put 12 more .22's in the stock butt.
