Horseshoe Meadows Road Conditions

Post by TriHard »

Does anyone know the latest road conditions to Horseshoe Meadows? Is the road clear of snow? I'm anxious to get up there; desert hiking and camping are great but I've got the itch to get back to the high country.

Thanks,

Ken

You might want to ask the same question at WhitneyPortalStore.com...great site for that area.

Looks like that link hasn't been updated since 12/4/2008. Too bad.

Just a quick update...

I called the Inyo County Road Department (1-760-878-0202) and asked about the status of the Horseshoe Meadows Road. The very nice lady who answered told me the Horseshoe Meadow Road is not open yet, however the roads to Whitney Portal, Onion Valley and Baxter Pass Trailhead are now opened (they opened last week). So it sounds like the high country access is going to be early this year.

Thanks to maverick, markskor and Baffman!!

Fishing doesn't open in GTW until July 1.

People keep saying there are reasons to go to altitude without fishing... but I just can't bring myself to verify this.

Why wouldn't you want to fish up in the high country? Especially when you might get a warm meal out of it. A fishing pole and some light tackle is always worth the extra pack weight.
