We call people by the name they prefer and attempt to pronounce their name in the manner they prefer, out of respect - once we learn of these preferences. The same applies to geographical names. The following Youtube underscores a POV mentioned in the article Maia shared with us, that the respectful way to refer to a geographic region is the way the locals refer to it themselves. Paying homage to regional vernacular is a small step to breaking down social barriers and earning other's trust. It is a sign of respectable, social grace.

FWIW: there are at least three ways to pronounce Appalachia, but only one is "correct".

So, yea, it's the Sierra or Sierra Nevada.
