2013 Mosquito Reports

Post by maverick »

1 - No mosquitoes or if there are some, but not biting yet
2 - Very light during the day, moderate at dawn and dusk
3 - Moderate during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk
4 - Heavy during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk
5 - Unbearable all day, no breaks, cannot eat outside of tent. If you stop, hundreds
will descend on you; when looking thru a camera viewfinder, you see more skeeters than
lake. If you slapped your arm, you'd smear blood from all the dead gorged bodies

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Ice House Reservoir, Crystal Basin Recreation area, west edge of Desolation Wilderness, May 12-13.
Only a few mosquitoes at dusk. And we were camped next to a grassy swampy area.

Laurel Lake-Kendrick Creek-Edyth Lake 5/10-5/13

Post by tomba »

May 10-13 northwest Yosemite: Laurel Lk, Kendrick Ck, Edyth Lk, below Bearup Lk, Jack Main Cyn, Lk Vernon. Few mosquitoes in daytime at creek crossings and few other areas, including evenings/mornings at camps. Many mosquitoes evening/morning NE from Edith Lk at elevation about 7400 ft - just below first patches of snow.

Wind (which can keep mosquitoes down) was weak.

Tuoloumne Meadows 5/25-5/26: On the hike up to Donohue Pass there were a few, rate it 1-2, and as I gained elevation, it was even better, a solid 1.

Emigrant Wilderness 5/31-6/2

Post by kpeter »

Emigrant Wilderness Crabtree--Piute Lake--Deer Lake and vicinities
May 31-June 2
The worst mosquitoes seem to be in a band from 7400-8200 feet.
A "4" at these locations:
Piute Lake
West Fork Cherry Creek Crossings
Piute Creek Crossing

At Deer Lake they were a 2, but were getting worse over the three days I was there.
