Wilts Col

Post by c9h13no3 » Mon Jul 29, 2019 11:54 am

Currently misspelled as "Wiltes Col" on the HST Map. Named after Charles Wilts, who made the first ascent of Echo Peak #9 with Spencer Austin.

GENERAL OVERVIEW: Pass between the Echo Peaks, used to access Matthes Crest/Echo Lake from Budd Lake.

CLASS/DIFFICULTY: Listed as "class 2-3" in Secor's book, but there's certainly no class 3 rock there. Both sides are a mix of sand & class 1-2 talus. Snowier on the north, steeper on the south.

Location: 37.8340, -119.4008, HST Map Link

Photo below was taken on 28-July-2019, a heavy snow year.

Nice name drop! To most people, he was just “Chuck”. To me, he was Professor Wilts (and he introduced me to rock climbing up at Tahquitz and Suicide).

It looks like the avatar is missing a methyl group, or my chemistry is all messed up by LA's smog............ Still, TH and DBH did their job! Cameron

There is a methyl hanging off the nitrogen?

If you’ve got some magic methyl, I could add some more for you.

Magic methyl is not in my inventory: I tend to stick with the reliable, old CH3CH2OH. Cameron
