Topix Carcamp Sept 29-30
Rosabella is coming to CA, so this is a good time to do our yearly Topix gathering. I got a few inputs from a few of you so we’ll get together on the east side. We’ll try to get two campsites at Onion Valley (out of Independence). A few of us sleep in our vehicles, and there’s a big parking lot near the campground so this should work for those that need tent space.

That is the start of my vacation, however, I have had too many trips down south already and I was only going to go twice this year to save wear and tear on vehicles as I drove 20,000 miles last year. I'm going to Mammoth for a group bp trip over Labor Day, so if I could find someone to drive for this forum get together going south on 395, I would spring for gas. I work in Carson City and could get off around 3:00PM depending on work load at work that day. Then I could ride my motorcycle down if the temps aren't too bad yet too. Definite maybe here.
Piece of cake.

with the new job it looks like I won't be off Monday for birthday - but count me in for Saturday and Sunday hiking
I vote for hiking up to Snow Crown on one of those days
open for other options. temps have been comfortable at night - will continue to update over the next couple weeks.

I can let you know in a week or two if Megan and I can come. REALLY want to make it if we can. My first HST trip is well overdue. Have some personal matters to take care of between now and then that have a slight chance of getting in the way, but in a week or two we'll know for sure if this is going to work for us. Thanks for putting this all together, Snowy!

From a camping website:
CAMPGROUND NAME: Onion Valley

UPDATE DATE: 2/2/2007
STATE: California
REGION: Pacific Southwest
RANGER DISTRICT: Mt. Whitney
NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Independence
RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or make on-line reservation

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 9,100 ft.
The campground, surrounded on three sides by massive mountains
with several waterfalls, is a tent camper/hiker paradise. Low-
growing Aspen along with Foxtail pine and White fir, dominate the
campground. Three clusters of walk-in tent sites provide
excellent privacy. Individual or communal bear-proof food
containers are located throughout the campground. Adjacent to
John Muir Wilderness, marvelous views are provided in any
direction. Group tent camping is limited to a few camp sites.
Hikes access several lakes and John Muir Wilderness. Firewood is
available for a fee.
Consider a day trip to the Manzanar National Historic Site -
relocation site for Japanese Americans during World War II -
