Hiked up the Piute Pass trail yesterday (7/11).

We turned around at the long traverse of a steep snowfield just below Loch Leven. The snow was extremely slippery/slushy and the runout was into boulders and trees. Other people had gone up it but it felt too risky to us. I suspect it will be much safer in a week or two.

We were both glad to have made the trip and my friend enjoyed their first trip to the Sierras so it was a success even though it turned into a dayhike rather than a couple nights out.

Gate at day-use parking lot was closed in the morning but had been opened by the afternoon. Summer has arrived.

Wonderful report, great writing! - and photos are a bit jaw-dropping and silence-inducing. Good info. re. the avalanche damage and ongoing risk of wet slides. Thank you very much!
