My wife and I also put 12 days of food in a pair of Bearikade Expedition cans
which are 900 cubic inches of volume. I don't think there is another can that
can effectively carry 10+ days of food at a reasonable weight. They are pricy
but you can amortize the cost over your lifetime of backpacking. If lived
where I didn't need to use a can all the time, I would rent when I did.
We eat about 1.25-1.50 pounds of food a day. We unwrap everything and put
it in ziplock bags. This keeps down the trash weight and when the bags are
empty we them for trash bags. Leave the bags less than full so they can be
molded to fit in every available space in the can.
