rightstar76 wrote:Ed, sounds like you are doing the Tahoe Yosemite Trail. If so, are you going to do the Summit City Creek section to Bear Valley? Also, if attempting the JMT instead or in addition to the TYT, did you get the coveted Donohue Pass exit permit?
I'm on the PCT exiting to Lone Pine over New Army Pass....well, that is the plan :\

The Donnel Fire is not the best news as I was going to hitch to Bridgeport to resupply...

Donnell Fire Update 8/5

Post by maverick »

Jez, already at 5,800 acres. :(

InciWeb:
Sunday, August 5, 2018 @ 10 am Fire Information Line: (209) 272-5455

LOCATION: Stanislaus National Forest

COMMAND TEAM: Central Coast Interagency Incident Management Team

ACRES: 5,800

PERCENT CONTAINED: 0%

TOTAL PERSONNEL – 207

4 Hand Crews, 3 Helicopters, 11 Engines

CURRENT SITUATION: The Donnell Fire started on August 1near the east side of Donnell Lake. The fire is burning primarily along the north bank of the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River in steep and rough terrain with heavy standing dead and down timber. The fire is being managed as full suppression incident from the start. Due to the other large fires in the region and state, resources are being ordered and filled as they are available. Other local incident management teams are sharing aircraft and personnel as needed.

Yesterday afternoon, strong winds pushed the fire northeast into the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness and across the Clark Fork Road towards Bald Peak. The fire grew by about 5,000 acres and is now 5,814 acres. The Red Flag Warning expired last night, however, weather patterns are expected to be similar today with slightly lower winds than as yesterday. Aircraft are assisting firefighters within the river canyon. The fire burned into the 2017 McCormick Fire, slowing its growth on the northeast flank.

Today, crews will monitor and prep for structure protection along Highway 108. Crews cleared vegetation around the Double Dome repeater last night and will continue to monitor the site today.

Yesterday, California Highway Patrol closed Highway 108 eastbound at the Eagle Meadow Rd. and westbound at Dardanelle Resort. A mandatory evacuation was implemented in the area, including all campgrounds and residences. Today, the evacuation will be extended to Kennedy Meadows.

As of 6 am today, the Central Coast Interagency Incident Management Team (Lee Rickard, IC) assumed management of the fire.

Visitors and residents are advised that smoke to the west of Pinecrest is likely coming from the Ferguson Fire.

Currently, the Pacific Crest Trail at Sonora Pass is open, but hikers are advised there may be smoke impacts on the trail.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS: Mandatory evacuation from Highway 108 at Eagle Meadow Road to Kennedy Meadows was implemented at 9 am today.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Lions Fire Update 8/5

Post by maverick »

InciWeb:
The Lions Fire is estimated at 7,549 acres with 65% containment, showing an increase of 55 acres. There are 180 personnel committed to the fire, including 7 crews, 4 helicopters, and a pack string of mules from the Stanislaus National Forest.

The most active portion of the fire remains on the western flank in the Cargyle Creek drainage of the Sierra National Forest. Increased fire activity is expected today.

Crews continue to make progress on the fire. The fireline along the northeast flank of the fire remains secure (south of Fern Lake) and a crew is strengthening this line. This line provides a buffer, keeping the main fire from spotting into King Creek to protect developed areas in Devils Postpile National Monument, Reds Meadow, and Mammoth Lakes.

Along the western flank, crews are using trail networks and rock barriers for containment lines. Crews also continue to construct direct and indirect fireline along the southwest and west flanks in an effort to keep the fire crossing the San Joaquin River. Helicopters are supporting them by cooling the fire’s edge with water drops as air conditions permit.

The area has experienced approximately 50% tree mortality from bark beetles and drought conditions. Fire activity includes short duration crown runs and group torching. The south and west flanks are expanding slowly, and in some locations the fire is moving downslope.

Hot and dry conditions remain in the forecast. A Red Flag warning is in effect today until 10 pm for gusty winds and low humidity.

The Reds Meadow Road and all services in the Reds Meadow Valley, including Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls, remain open.

[float=]Closures: [/float]There is an emergency trail closure for the Fern Lake and Beck Lake Trails on the Inyo National Forest and emergency trail closures and a Forest Order to close the area on the Sierra National Forest (west of the North Fork of the San Joaquin River, north of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River and South of Iron Creek).

Most of Yosemite closed "indefinitely" source: https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/news/yos ... n-fire.htm
Date: August 5, 2018
Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Road Remain Open from U.S. 395

Due to increased fire activity in the areas adjacent to and on Yosemite National Park, park administrators and fire managers have made the decision to extend the current park closures indefinitely. Fire managers are continuously assessing conditions in the area and will work directly with and will immediately advise park managers as conditions change and it becomes safe to reopen.

Firefighters remain committed to fully suppressing this fire and are actively engaged, taking action to limit the fire’s spread when it is safe to do so. The fire activity inside Yosemite National Park is dynamic. Over the past 48 hours, fire has impacted all of the roads used to access Yosemite Valley, burning dead and downed trees that can become very explosive and fall without warning. There are also significant terrain hazards for firefighters. These hazards, along with extreme fire behavior and frequent weather changes, have made this an extremely difficult fire fight.

There is active fire burning above the Arch Rock Entrance Station, moving up the Merced River Canyon towards West Yosemite Valley. There is active fire burning near Foresta and structure protection is currently in place. No structures have been lost in the communities of Foresta, El Portal, or Yosemite West. Earlier this week, fire crossed the Wawona Road, following the Indian Creek drainage. This fire has crossed Glacier Point Road, forced firefighters to shelter in place at Badger Pass. To learn more about current fire progression, visithttps://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/map/5927/.

The following areas remain closed: Yosemite Valley, El Portal Road, Wawona Road, Big Oak Flat Road, Glacier Point, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, the Merced Grove of Giant Sequoias, Wawona Campground, Crane Flat Campground, Tamarack Campground, and several other sections of the Park. Please visit www.nps.gov/yose for the most up to date information.

A large portion of Yosemite National Park remains open. Tioga Road from Tioga Pass to White Wolf is open to all visitors and vehicles. Most of the trails and campgrounds along this route, including the Tuolumne Meadows Campground are open. Visitor services along Tioga Road, including the High Sierra Camps and the Tuolumne Meadows Store are open.

The Gateway communities of Sonora, Groveland, Mariposa, Oakhurst, and Lee Vining are great places to recreate and offer a wide variety of opportunities. Please contact the local visitor centers to learn about recreational opportunities in the Gateway communities.

Since the Ferguson Fire began on Friday, July 13, 2018 park visitors, employees, local businesses and communities have all been affected. We realize this has been a difficult time for all involved. Yosemite National Park is committed to supporting our Gateway communities and we will continue to work closely with all of our stakeholders to work through this emergency.

For updated 24-hour road and weather conditions for Yosemite National Park, please call 209-372-0200, press 1 and press 1 again. Updated information is also available on the park’s website at www.nps.gov/yose and on the Yosemite National Park Facebook page.
