I am so sad because I have not been able to hike due to this relentless heat and smoke! Last year and this year are first years EVER, that I could find no where to go. I could always hike somewhere, it was just a matter of how far I would drive.
My asthma just doesn’t allow me to deal with the smoke. I was hoping for an October trip, my my hopes are fading with the new fires in sequoia. SIGH.

I can’t sit to get up there this year! You are right about the PCT/JMT folks not going off trail. I met several of them last year going over Piute Pass and down Piute Canyon. Most of those I met did not even carry maps!
